HKU Opens New Zhangjiang Facilities for Teaching and Research in Shanghai

The University of Hong Kong has opened two new buildings at its HKU Zhangjiang Base in Shanghai, expanding the facilities available for teaching, research, and student life as the University grows its presence in the city.

The pair of buildings will support the HKU School of Computing and Data Science (CDS), as well as interdisciplinary work in intelligent computing, future electronics, and materials manufacturing. Together, they will allow Zhangjiang Base to welcome more than 200 undergraduate and master’s students in the new semester.

Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, said the University would use the Base to deepen links with local industry and advance interdisciplinary research.

“Rooted in Zhangjiang’s fertile ground for science and innovation, we will deepen collaboration with local industries, tackle challenges in cutting-edge interdisciplinary fields, and build a full-chain innovation ecosystem integrating research, teaching, and industry,” he said at the opening ceremony.

The ceremony marked the second phase of development at HKU Zhangjiang Base, which is located in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Science City. The Base is part of HKU’s wider Shanghai strategy, as it extends CDS’ teaching and research activity from Hong Kong to Shanghai.

Building 3 includes AI Labs, research and collaboration laboratories, and the Institute of Intelligent Computing. Building 5 will provide sports, co-creation, and multi-purpose activity spaces. It also houses the University High Table, bringing HKU’s high-table tradition to Shanghai.

The buildings were opened during the “HKU Magic Hour — HKU Shines in Zhangjiang” event, held August 30 and attended by representatives of the Shanghai municipal and district governments, University leaders, faculty members, students, and alumni.

HKU Zhangjiang Base is one of four strategic bases opened by the University in Shanghai, along with Caohejing Base at Shanghai’s Caohejing Hi-Tech Oasis, the HKU Shanghai Headquarters in the Bund-22 heritage building, and the Bund SOHO Base.

The four strategic bases are expected to serve as vital platforms for academic exchange, technological innovation, and industry collaboration, further cementing HKU’s position as a global leader in education and research.
