HKU’s Student Ambassadors Organise Cultural Carnival to Showcase Campus Diversity
A group of student ambassadors from The University of Hong Kong (HKU) organised a vibrant Cultural Carnival on campus from September 22 to 23, 2026. The event featured a diverse array of cultural performances and booths, highlighting HKU’s dynamic and international campus environment while fostering integration among students from various backgrounds. Distinguished guests attended the Opening Ceremony on September 22 (Tuesday), including Professor Bennett Yim, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange at HKU, as well as representatives from several consulates-general in Hong Kong.
Professor Yim stated, “For the 2026/27 academic year, HKU admitted around 1,800 non-local undergraduate students*, believed to be the largest intake in Hong Kong. HKU has consistently taken the lead in supporting the HKSAR Government’s efforts to attract global talent and promote Hong Kong’s higher education internationally, strengthening the ‘Study in Hong Kong’ initiative. Through our ongoing efforts to admit the most talented and suitable students, we are pleased to see our student community becoming increasingly diverse in recent years.”
HKU is recognised as one of the most international universities worldwide, with students representing 104 countries and regions. The diverse community continues to attract students from across the globe. For the 2026/27 academic year, HKU received a record-breaking number of over 28,000 non-local undergraduate applications. The increase in applications from regions outside the Chinese Mainland was particularly notable, rising 77% compared to last year.
This year’s Cultural Carnival, organised by HKU student ambassadors, marks its second edition, providing a platform for students to share diverse cultures with the HKU community and has become one of the key events on campus. The HKU Admissions Office recruits approximately 450 student ambassadors annually from various nationalities and academic backgrounds, enabling them to represent HKU in community outreach and promotional activities. Through sharing their experiences of studying and living at HKU, student ambassadors promote cross-cultural understanding and inclusion, fostering a vibrant and diverse campus and community environment.
HKU remains committed to investing additional resources to enhance its teaching and learning environment, while also increasing support for students from various cultural backgrounds.
