Strokes of Myanmar: Library Exhibition Showcases Country’s Modern Art Scene

For Myanmar students in Hong Kong, finding a space in the city that reflects their heritage can be rare. A new exhibition at HKU Libraries aims to change that by showcasing art from the country’s emerging and well-known artists.

“Strokes of Myanmar,” which runs through 30 September 2026, features works donated by Professor Ian Holliday, University Registrar a longtime scholar of Myanmar politics and governance. The collection captures everyday life, traditions, and beliefs in the country, providing a glimpse into the stories and perspectives that shape life in the region.

Ms Flora Ng, Chief Information Officer and University Librarian, expressed her sincere appreciation to Professor Ian Holliday, the Registrar, for his generous donation, which makes a meaningful contribution to the Library’s collection and enriches the cultural life of the University community.

The exhibition is held at the Ko Wong Wai Ching Wendy Fine Arts Digital Library on the third floor of the Main Library. Admission is free and no registration is required.

For one student, the impact was immediate. “When I went into the room, I heard Myanmar music at the university where I was studying,” she said. “There are very few Myanmar people in Hong Kong, and we see very few Myanmar-related objects. Looking at these paintings about my country... I felt really attached.”

The exhibition serves as a resting area for students while fostering a sense of belonging. The artworks include pieces by Aung Khaing, Aung Ko, Co Thiee, Dawei Lay, Eain Aye Kyaw, Fela, Han Tin Swe, Linn Lett, Min Zaw, Myint Swe, Shine Lu, Soe Soe, and Zwe Yan Naing.
