In Remembrance of Mr Tung Chee Hwa: A Tribute from HKU President Xiang Zhang

On the occasion of the vigil held tomorrow (19 September) and ahead of Sunday’s public memorial and funeral ceremony, The University of Hong Kong reflects with profound reverence on the enduring legacy of Mr Tung Chee-hwa, former Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, first Chief Executive of the HKSAR, and former Chancellor of HKU.

Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, offered this tribute:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Tung Chee Hwa. Mr. Tung was not only a visionary leader, but a pivotal figure in laying the foundation for Hong Kong’s smooth transition and long-term stability. With extraordinary wisdom and a profound love for both our country and our city, he bore immense responsibility at a monumental turning point in our history, guiding Hong Kong through formidable challenges to open a new chapter. Even after stepping down from public office, his devotion to Hong Kong never wavered. His kindness and wisdom have left an indelible imprint on us all.

Mr. Tung was deeply devoted to the cause of education, putting into practice his belief in nurturing talent for the prosperity of our nation and society. His generous support through the Tung Foundation in establishing the New College at the University of Hong Kong reflected his commitment to cultivating future leaders with both a deep affection for their homeland and a broad global horizon. His extraordinary vision and dedication are woven into the very fabric of our campus and will remain imprinted in the hearts of our students and faculty.

Personally, I will always fondly remember the insightful advice Mr. Tung graciously shared with me over the years. His words of wisdom continue to guide my work today. I will forever cherish his warmth and grace, and regard him as both my guiding mentor and dear friend. My deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May the spirit and values he championed continue to thrive in the city he so deeply loved.”

HKU remembers with deep gratitude Mr Tung's visionary and selfless service to Hong Kong and his encouragement of the University’s work. His commitment to developing talent and strengthening Hong Kong's capacity for innovation will remain an important part of his public service legacy.
