HKU Honours Alumna’s Legacy at Phoenix Yuen College Dedication
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) dedicated Phoenix Yuen College September 29, celebrating the enduring educational and artistic legacy of late alumna Mrs Phoenix Yuen and the extraordinary support given to the University and its students by the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited.
Mrs Phoenix Yuen was a beloved educator, performing artist, and proud HKU graduate known for her lifelong commitment to community service. Her passion for learning and dedication to enriching others’ lives continue to resonate within the University community.
The dedication ceremony, which was held at the College Hall, symbolises the lasting partnership between the University and the Yuen family to empower future generations through holistic education.
Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, officiated the ceremony and shared his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the University. He expressed deep appreciation for the Yuen family’s generosity and vision, paying tribute to Mrs Yuen’s enduring impact as an educator and artist.
Dr Joseph Yuen, representing the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited, highlighted the evolving nature of learning in today’s world. He noted that, in an era characterised by complex global challenges and rapid advances in artificial intelligence, learning extends far beyond textbooks and classrooms.
Dr Yuen expressed confidence that HKU would continue to guide students as they navigate a dynamic world, aligning with the University’s vision of being “a world-leading university transforming humanity’s future.” Drawing on the Serenity Prayer, he encouraged students to cultivate serenity, courage, and wisdom to distinguish between what can and cannot be changed.
Professor Sophia Chan, Master of Phoenix Yuen College, emphasised the role of residential education in fostering community and leadership. She noted that the college strives to create an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds can learn from one another, form lifelong friendships, and develop into compassionate global citizens.
Other distinguished guests included Mr Simon Ho of the Phoenix Yuen Foundation Fund Limited, Professor Yang Wang, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Advancement) of HKU; Professor Chen Lin, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Business); Professor Kelvin Yeung, Dean of Student Affairs; Professor Ivan Hung, Master of Karson Choi College; Professor Pamela Lee, Master of D. H. Chen College; Professor Kaimin Shih, Master of College 2; and members of the College community.
The dedication ceremony included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Dr Yuen, Professor Zhang, and Professor Chan. Following the event, guests attended a High Table Dinner at Loke Yew Hall to celebrate the milestone and reflect on the values embodied by Mrs Yuen’s legacy.
