New SPARC Alliance and HK$160m Joint Fund to Accelerate Research Commercialisation
The University of Hong Kong unveiled a major new engine for translating research into real-world impact Wednesday: the HKU Strategic Partnership Alliance for Research and Commercialisation (SPARC).
Launched at the HKU Innovation Week 2026 Main Event, SPARC will convene over 40 corporations and organisations to foster collaborative research and establish joint laboratories to accelerate the translation of discoveries into practical applications, supporting market-driven innovation and strategic investment.
Professor Richard Wong, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of HKU, praised the initiative. “HKU SPARC closely connects research institutes with industry partners to nurture and convene talent,” he said. “With the alliance launched, we continue to drive innovation in alignment with national priorities and strategies.”
Simultaneously, the University also announced the first close of a HK$160 million joint fund with Silicon Valley venture capital firm DEFTA Partners.
The HKU Entrepreneurship Engine Fund x DEFTA Joint Fund will provide patient capital to seed- and early-stage ventures emerging from HKU's innovation ecosystem, the University said in a statement. It added that the fund is designed to support the long-term development of high-potential technologies with longer research cycles, leveraging DEFTA's investment networks in the US, Japan, and Asia.
HKU Innovation Week 2026’s Main Event showcased more than 120 groundbreaking innovations across biomedical sciences, healthcare, smart living, engineering, architecture, and sustainability.
The event brought together over 1,000 leaders from government, industry, academia, and the investment community fostering dialogue and partnerships for accelerating research translation, while reflecting the University’s commitment to incubating the next generation of innovators.
