ShanghaiRanking Places Multiple HKU Subjects Among the World’s Best

Multiple HKU subjects rank among the best in the world, according to ShanghaiRanking’s just released 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

Leading the way was the Faculty of Education, which was ranked second in the world, its highest-ever ranking and first in Asia.

“This achievement reflects the collective efforts of our Faculty members in producing research of the highest quality and publishing in leading international journals,” said Professor Yang Rui, Dean of Education at HKU. “It also speaks to the strength of our global research partnerships, which continue to broaden the reach and relevance of our work. I am deeply grateful to our Faculty members for their commitment to advancing educational knowledge and impact worldwide.”

Four other HKU subjects ranked in the top 10 in their respective fields, including Finance (#3), Library & Information Science (#5), Geography (#6), and Transportation Science & Technology (#10). Dentistry, Civil Engineering, and Remote Sensing also placed in the top 15.

The GRAS evaluates approximately 2,000 universities worldwide across 57 subjects in the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. The ranking is based on nine objective indicators grouped into five categories: World-Class Faculty, World-Class Research Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration.

The University of Hong Kong has achieved new highs in multiple global rankings in recent years, including successive years as the 11th ranked university in the world according to QS.
